Track your Japan shopping and refund prep

Refund method: Pay the tax-inclusive price, then ask how you'll get the refund and set it up at the store: card, bank transfer, an app, or cash at the airport. The customs check is due within 90 days of each purchase, counting from the next day. Each receipt shows its own deadline. ¥5,000 before tax at the same store on the same day is the minimum. There is no consumables split or cap — only what you can carry out yourself. Do not open or use the items. Gold and platinum bars and coins are not eligible. For an item of ¥1,000,000 or more before tax, carry the certificate or warranty.

Card, bank, and app refunds are paid after departure by the store or its refund company. There is no official timeline. Cash can be the same day at a Self Tax Refund machine at Haneda, Narita, or Naha, after the customs kiosk. A refund-company fee may be deducted. Tabikin does not promise a method or a date.
