About Japan's New System

Effective November 1, 2026: Japan shifts from instant tax exemption at checkout to a pay-first refund system. Customs confirms export at departure; the shop or its refund provider issues the refund.

Minimum spend: Eligible purchases totaling ¥5,000 or more (pre-tax) per tax-free store, per day qualify. Under the refund method, the old general-goods/consumables split and consumables cap are abolished.

At the store: Show the required eligibility document (normally your passport), pay the tax-inclusive price, and keep the receipt/refund instructions. The store electronically records the tax-free purchase.

At departure: BEFORE checking luggage, present your passport at the tax-free procedure terminal (or use Visit Japan Web where supported). A GREEN result completes customs confirmation; a RED result requires physical inspection. The store/provider issues the refund after customs confirmation.
