Japan tax-free system update

A new refund system starts November 1, 2026

Traveling through October 31, 2026? The current system still applies: eligible purchases can generally be sold tax-free at the time of purchase, subject to the current rules.

Purchasing November 1, 2026 or later? Eligible shoppers will pay the tax-inclusive price first. Customs must confirm the goods are leaving Japan when you depart within 90 days of purchase, and the tax-free shop or its refund provider issues the refund after confirmation. The Ā„5,000 pre-tax minimum remains; the old general-goods/consumables split, Ā„500,000 consumables cap, and special consumables packaging are abolished under the new system.
